Moving forward, new users to Instagram who are under the age of 16 will have a private account by default. Users will still have the option to change back to a public profile once set up, but this is one of the many changes Instagram is putting in place to protect young users online.
Under 16’s who have set up an account before this announcement will get a notification urging them to make their profile private whilst explaining the benefits of doing so.
Facebook is also looking at the way their younger users use the app by reviewing the way they get targeted by ads. From now, advertisers will only be allowed to target young users by their age, gender and location. Previously, it was possible to target based on interest, activity, app usage and so on.
