There was once a day we thought mind control was a thing of the future… Well according to reports Facebook has acquired a start-up called CTRL-Labs, a company which is working on software that would enable people to control a digital avatar, using only their thoughts.
It all sounds like the stuff of science fiction, which it incidentally has become, but this research actually took place back in the 60’s when the CIA ran a program called “MKUltra”, which was a human experiment for the purpose of developing a procedure that would in fact weaken the individual and force confession through mind control.
Sounds a bit like the blurb of a sci-fi film, right?
Facebook have been reported to be paying up to £1 billion for CTRL-Labs, which is being brought into their experimental research teams. The aim being a process which connects Facebook directly into your brain – which i’m unsure will be an idea everyone will be on board with?
Of course, there are benefits to such technology. Such innovation would help people with severe paralysis, similar to the automated image recognition technology helps the visually impaired. But the bigger question that will no doubt be on everyone’s mind is “Should we trust Facebook to invade our very thoughts?”
Do you think it’s an innovation or an invasion of privacy?
